Classic Zippered Men's Cardigan Specially selected Shetland fleece was used to knit the unique "Everest" garments worn by the mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953, when he was the first climber to reach the summit of Mount Everest. The garments were developed and knitted by T.M. Adie and Sons of Voe, Shetland. In Shetland the fleece was traditionally removed, or 'rooed' by plucking with the fingers, close to the skin of the sheep. This was done once a year when sheep naturally shed their outer fleece and thus 'rooing' was assisted by the natural process.
