What kilt is right for me? Casual versus Full Highland kilt ( the decision) What’s the difference? The weight of the fabric, the thickness, is the same for both kilts. It is the total number of yards used , that makes the distinction between the two. This is the the question we answer the most often. Here are the facts and my experience as I have owned both. Casual Kilt (made from 4-5 yards of fabric) Look: The casual kilt looks just like an 8 yard kilt. Made in the same way with shallow pleats, and because of this does not swing or hang as well. Maintenance: Casual kilts require to be on a kilt hanger or hung up by the hang straps when stored. Hanger preferred. Pleats wrinkle easily. This garment does have much higher maintenance than an 8 yard. History: Originally designed for Highland Athletes to compete in. The Casual kilt has not been around that long in the great scheme of things. Is a Casual kilt right for me? If you are in very warm climates, Arizona, Texas, Florida. If you are only going to wear a kilt a couple of times a year. For those on a very tight budget.
Full Highland 8 yard Look: This kilt does have a better swing and hangs on the body better than a casual kilt. This is not the Mel Gibson style kilt. His was a length of fabric wrapped around the body and then thrown over the shoulder. Maintenance: You can ask my wife. I regularly throw my kilt in the chair and leave it there until required. I pick it up, shake it and put it on. The pleats stay in great. History: This has been the kilt since the early Victorian Era. Tailored and pleated in the back. This is the standard of kilts. Is a Full Highland kilt right for me? For those that are serious about their heritage. This kilt will last many generations. I wear this in warm or cold weather.
