We opened for business on December 6th 1996 as The Tartan & Thistle Scottish Shop. We changed our name some years later to The Kilt & Thistle Scottish Shoppes with the advent of our internet business.  With the web address www.kilts.com this allows our customers to find using the search word kilt, or the plural kilts. The Kilt & Thistle has also allowed the non-Scottish to know what we do, as the word tartan is relatively unknown to the uninitiated.  Since we started in Salem , Oregon as a small retail store before the internet was a household word, we never expected to be more than a family hobby business. The internet has allowed us to reach the thousands of Scots in the world that are not near a Scottish Shop.  However our retail store regularly has customers from as far North as Canada, and as far South as San Francisco and Sacramento.  Even though much of our competition does not have the expense of a retail store, operating out of their garage or basement, we feel it is important for our customers to have the option to see the merchandise before you buy.  Also as consumers ourselves we like to deal with a business that actually has a business address that gives the business a legitimate existence. Thousands of happy customers  have allowed us to grow over the years, enlarging our retail location four times. This growth has given us an opportunity to add many great people to help us bring you the best in Highland Clothing. Click here to see the whole team.

Unlike many web sites, we actually have a retail location, the one you see pictures of. We also attend about twelve Highland Games and Festivals each year. You see we like to talk to you and share our common Heritage .
Please come by our shop in Salem, Oregon  when you can. We have many of our customers order their kilt or or clothing , and then come by the shop for the final fitting.

Retail Hours:  11am to 5pm Tuesday  through Saturday. Closed Sundays & Mondays. Phones are answered Monday through Saturday 8AM to 5PM.

Retail Store Directions: From North I-5 take exit 260A Salem Parkway to State Street take a left around the block.  189 Liberty St.  We are in the  historic Reed Opera House Mall.
 From the South I-5 exit 253 turn left at stop light turn right on Liberty. We are at the corner of Court and Liberty.
