Many kilts were trade ins to upgrade from a 10oz. wool to a real kilt in 13oz. or 16oz.  The other reason is shrinkage. It is a known fact that wool, and kilts specifically, will shrink if left in the closet unworn too long. Many men have purchased a kilt, worn it once, and put it in the closet. Several years later another occasion comes up that they would like to wear their kilt for , and find that it no longer fits. We can only assume at that point that it must be the wool that is shrinking.
