Kilts for Men – When are they Worn?

So, on what occasions will you see kilts traditionally being worn?

Highland games

Specially adapted kilts for men are used in the Highland Games

These games dominate the sporting calendar in the Highland region of Scotland during the summer months. If you’re getting accustomed to seeing athletes putting on “shorty shorts,” then this is where Scottish men differ! You will more than likely see most male competitors competing in their kilts.

Edinburgh Military Tattoo

Men's Kilts are often used by performers at the Tattoo.

Okay, this isn’t the usual tattoo season that you’re thinking of. Edinburgh Military Tattoo is one of the biggest tourist events in Scotland, taking place during the month of August when the Edinburgh Fringe festival is on. The event began in 1949 and it’s a must see if you are in Edinburgh or the surrounding area when it is on. Since this is an annual celebration and a tourist attraction, you can also see a lot of Scottish men wearing kilts here, aswell as the performers in the Tattoo.

Tartan Day

Tartan Day kilts are very popular.

This is one of the major occasions where countries like the United States, Canada and the UK, particularly Scotland, commemorate their strong connections with one another. In the United States, Tartan Day is celebrated every 6th of April and is a national holiday. Commemorating their links with Scotland, towns, and cities from the United States and Canada will often enjoy the day with pipe bands, whilst wearing their Scottish kilt.

Saint Paddy’s Day

St Patricks Day Kilts are popular.

Yes, this is the feast Saint Patrick. It’s a cultural and religious occasion which is usually celebrated on the 17th of March. Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and the day is considered to be a celebration of the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. You will notice that green colored kilts and costumes are present in this day. Shamrocks and green ribbons are a few of the accessories people use to honor this day. Graduation ceremonies

Graduation kilts for men are usually used.

Most countries encourage their graduation students to wear their national dress when taking part in a graduation ceremony. This means that Scottish students tend to graduate wearing their kilt. Held with much importance and value, Scottish students feel wearing kilts should be done during significant days in their lives – such as the day they leave the academia.

After wearing a kilt at one of these occasions, it is important to wash it.

Should You Wash Your Men’s Kilt?

You shouldn’t wash your kilt using your washer at home. It will undoubtedly ruin the wool and the pleats. Tossing it into the automatic washer will result in disaster.

It is important to first and foremost, search for dry cleaning companies in your town. You may ask other people, friends, and co-workers if they can recommend reliable shops. You may also look into the local business directories online and it is important to ask these cleaning companies if they have experience washing kilts. This will at least present you with an idea if they know how to care for men’s kilts. You may have to end up visiting the laundry and dry cleaning shop personally, so you can check their equipment and see if they have a washer designed specifically for washing gentle clothing, like the kilt.
