Description
The Tartan Fly Plaid is worn over the left shoulder of the kilt wearer. It originated from the Great Plaid originally worn in the Scottish Highlands. Measuring 46″ by 46″, it is a simple, yet stylish garment to wear with your kilt. It has edges which are fringed & you may notice that there is a box pleat in one of the corners of the Fly Plaid.
Originally, Highlanders wore the the Great Plaid. This tended to be a large piece of untailored cloth. When worn in the 16th century, it measured an incredibly 9 yards in length! To reduce the size, half of the Great Plaid was pleated and held in place around the waist using a belt. The upper portion of the Great Plaid was then worn over the shoulder (typically the left shoulder) and then it was gathered at the front of the wearer where it could then be used as a hood for sheltering during the rain. It really was multi-functional!
It is important to select a Tartan Fly Plaid that matches your kilt tartan. We would also recommend that you choose the same fabric that your kilt was made of so it matches exactly. If you require help with this, please let us know. The Tartan Fly Plaid is perfect for weddings or any formal occasion. Normally, the Fly Plaid is worn with a jacket, such as a Prince Charlie Jacket or an Argyll Jacket, with an accompanying vest & brooch.
